Old Hollywood Glamour Meets Modern Philanthropy: How Immersive Storytelling Transformed Rally 4 Kids

Old Hollywood Glamour Meets Modern Philanthropy: How Immersive Storytelling Transformed Rally 4 Kids

Imagine the scene: vintage Cadillacs parked alongside modern Ferraris, women in feathered headpieces and men in tuxedos, all against the backdrop of the stunning Bella Vista Ranch polo field at sunset. But this wasn't a movie set—it was philanthropy reimagined through the lens of Old Hollywood glamour.

When United Boys & Girls Clubs approached us to elevate their annual Rally 4 Kids fundraiser, we knew this wasn't just about creating pretty centerpieces. This was about crafting an experience so compelling that checkbooks would open wider, hearts would connect deeper, and a record-breaking $450,000 would be raised in a single evening.

The Challenge: Fundraising Fatigue

Let's face it—Santa Barbara's philanthropic community attends dozens of galas each year. Another silent auction, another chicken dinner, another PowerPoint presentation showing impact statistics... even the most dedicated donors experience fundraising fatigue.

Our challenge: How do we transform a traditional fundraiser into an immersive experience that would not only sell out at 320 guests but create such demand that the event would need to relocate to accommodate 500+ attendees the following year?

The answer was hiding in plain sight—in the journey itself.

The Rally: From Pit Stop to Plot Point

The Rally 4 Kids isn't just a clever name—it's 68 exotic and classic cars driving 110 miles through Santa Barbara County's most stunning landscapes. Rather than treating this as merely pre-gala entertainment, we reimagined the entire rally as the first act of our immersive story.

Each pit stop—La Cumbre Peak, Sunstone Winery, Santa Barbara City College, and the Downtown Boys & Girls Club—became a chapter in our narrative. At each location, drivers didn't just participate in "challenges"—they experienced firsthand the types of activities that Club members engage in daily.

At the Downtown Club pit stop, for example, rally participants were paired with Club members who guided them through STEM activities similar to their after-school programs. This wasn't just about scoring points in a competition—it was about creating emotional connections between donors and the children they would be supporting.

"I've been to dozens of fundraisers," one first-time rally participant told me, "but I've never actually met the kids who benefit from my donation. Having Miguel show me his robotics project made everything real in a way that donation statistics never could."

The Transformation: Polo Field to Paramount Pictures

As the sun began to set, rally participants arrived at Bella Vista Ranch to find themselves transported to the golden age of Hollywood. Rather than traditional banquet decor, we created environmental storytelling through:

  • A red carpet entrance complete with "paparazzi" photographers (whose photos would later be available for purchase as an additional fundraising opportunity)

  • Vintage movie posters reimagined to feature Club members and their achievements

  • Signature cocktails named after famous Hollywood films with a twist that highlighted Club programs

  • Table centerpieces featuring gilded film reels interspersed with photos of Club members

  • A custom Hollywood sign installation that served as both decor and photo opportunity

But the true immersion came through the program itself.

Breaking the Fourth Wall

Traditional galas separate entertainment from fundraising—first you enjoy performances, then you open your wallet. We intentionally broke this fourth wall by weaving Club members into every aspect of the evening:

  • Rather than having servers pass appetizers, Club members (appropriately dressed for the theme) welcomed guests with trays of hors d'oeuvres, introducing themselves and sharing brief stories about their Club experiences

  • Instead of a standard slideshow, we created a "live trailer" where Club members performed vignettes highlighting different programs, moving throughout the dinner space rather than remaining confined to a stage

  • During dinner, each table had a "special guest"—a Club member who rotated between courses, ensuring every donor connected with multiple children

The most powerful moment came during the award presentation to philanthropists Donavan and Randie Judkins. Rather than having just the CEO present the Michael & Anne Towbes Award, three Club members whose scholarships had been directly funded by the Judkins joined him on stage, each sharing a personal story about how the Club had changed their trajectory.

When Randie Judkins urged the crowd to "dig deep, open your checkbooks, and support these kids," it wasn't an abstract request—it was personal. Guests weren't just supporting an organization; they were supporting Miguel, Sophia, and James, whose stories they'd just heard, whose hands they'd just shaken.

The Results: Beyond the Numbers

Yes, the event raised over $450,000—a record-breaking amount. Yes, it sold out with 320 attendees and created such demand that a larger venue was secured for the following year.

But the true measure of success came in the form of engagement that extended far beyond the event itself:

  • Multiple rally participants later volunteered to mentor Club members in their professional fields

  • Several companies represented at the gala initiated corporate partnership programs with the Clubs

  • The wait list for the following year's rally began forming before the evening had even concluded

As Michael Baker, CEO of UBGC, reflected: "This wasn't just our most successful fundraiser financially—it fundamentally changed how our donor community relates to our organization. People left feeling like part of our family, not just supporters of our cause."

The Takeaway: Immersion Creates Investment

The success of the Old Hollywood Rally 4 Kids reinforces what we've always believed at Felici Events: people remember how you make them feel. By creating an immersive experience that engaged all five senses and created genuine emotional connections, we didn't just host a successful event—we transformed supporters into advocates.

When philanthropy feels like participation rather than observation, the impact extends far beyond a single evening or donation. It creates a community of support that sustains organizations like the United Boys & Girls Clubs through challenges like the pandemic, when, as Michael Baker noted, "If it weren't for the generosity of the Judkins, I'm not sure how we would've made it through Covid."

As we prepare for next year's even larger Rally 4 Kids, we're reminded that the most powerful fundraising tool isn't the auction item or the paddle raise—it's the story you tell and how you make your guests feel while telling it.

Ready to transform your organization's next fundraiser from an obligation into an immersive experience? Let's talk about how storytelling, environment, and emotional connection can help you not just meet but exceed your fundraising goals.

An Evening with Rick Steves for TVSB

Felici Events Produces Historic Evening with Rick Steves at Santa Barbara's Arlington Theatre

When TV Santa Barbara sought to celebrate their 50th anniversary with television's most renowned travel expert, they turned to Santa Barbara's premier event production company, Felici Events, to create an unforgettable evening at the historic Arlington Theatre.

The January 21st celebration, produced and managed by Felici Events' team, transformed the iconic venue into a sophisticated setting worthy of international travel expert Rick Steves. From the illuminated marquee to the expertly choreographed VIP reception, every detail reflected the intersection of global exploration and local community that defines both Rick Steves' philosophy and TVSB's mission.

Our production team orchestrated multiple event spaces, including:

  • A stunning VIP reception in the Arlington's historic courtyard

  • Professional lighting design highlighting the venue's Spanish Colonial Revival architecture

  • Custom 50th anniversary gobos created by Islay Events

  • An innovative "mosh-pit style" book signing area that accommodated hundreds of enthusiastic fans

  • Seamless technical production for the main presentation

The sold-out event drew over 600 attendees and featured thoughtfully curated elements that enhanced the guest experience: from the 40-foot red carpet entrance to the carefully planned crowd flow that maintained an intimate atmosphere despite the venue's grand scale.

"Creating an event that honors both Rick Steves' travel expertise and TVSB's community media legacy required careful attention to every detail," says Zohe Felici, principal at Felici Events. "Our team's ability to adapt to last-minute travel changes while maintaining the evening's elegant flow demonstrates why Santa Barbara's most prestigious organizations trust us with their signature events."

The success of "An Evening with Rick Steves" adds to Felici Events' portfolio of high-profile productions at Santa Barbara's premier venues, combining our signature attention to detail with the flexibility required for live events featuring international personalities.

Wedding Wisdom Feature on Edible Magazine

Wedding Wisdom Feature on Edible Magazine

Recently I was was featured in the new (Wedding) Issue of Edible Santa Barbara Magazine (page 36). If you have not gotten a chance to grab it or don’t live locally, you can get the online version HERE.

Within the Wedding Wisdom article, Felici gives tips how to create a perfect and memorable Santa Barbara wedding, starting with one of the most important step: how to pick a wedding venue. She goes on to say that in Santa Barbara couples have plenty of choices when it comes to location. They can choose beachfront or mountain views, Spanish-style spots downtown, elegant hotels, or opt for picturesque wine country wedding. Felici specifically calls out Roblar Winery, Carhartt Cabin, and Acme Hospitality Group’s venues including Loquita, La Paloma, and The Lark.

Aside from selecting a gorgeous venue, Felici also recommends adding personal touches, giving special attention to other events surrounding the wedding like the rehearsal dinner or a farewell brunch, and working with some of the best and most trusted vendors in Santa Barbara including Ella & Louie Flowers and DJ Darla Bea. She even gives readers some insight into a couple of the hottest trends right now in the wedding industry including sustainability and dramatic ceilings.

From Zohe Felici:

I am so honored to be featured and to represent the local wedding community. I am especially grateful for my friendship with the kind and talented Krista Harris, editor of this gorgeous, educational, and mouth-watering magazine. She and I connected because we both THRIVE on sharing all the amazingness our area offers...and we both love food (no-brainer).

Also, make sure to check out the wedding of Jennifer and Tommy highlighted in the magazine, held at Lions Park in Carpinteria and photographed by Ingrid Bostrom.

Unique Team Building and Group Activities Santa Barbara Offers

Unique Team Building and Group Activities Santa Barbara Offers

Visit Santa Barbara invited Felici Events to have a conversation with local hotel sales teams and share ways to get groups to interact – either on-site at the hotels or out in the community, highlighting what we offer as a unique service and product in order to help work that messaging into their value proposition for holding the meeting in Santa Barbara - BEYOND THE BALLROOM.

What we are hearing for meeting planning post-pandemic is people need a “Why” to leave home and travel for meetings.  Offsite meetings can’t just be about sitting in a conference room watching a PowerPoint, teams can just as easily sit at home and do that via Zoom.  Team Building events bring value and excitement to meetings while giving attendees the chance to bond with co-workers, interact with senior leaders, and embrace company culture.

Immersion and experiential is our niche and we, at Felici Events, know that not all groups have time or budget to leave the hotel grounds so it would help to know if you can bring programming on-site.

Cannabis at Events - an Educational Panel for Wedding and Event Professionals

Cannabis at Events - an Educational Panel for Wedding and Event Professionals

My wedding blog hosted an informative workshop for wedding professionals and the ever-curious question of how will our industry be able to safely, ethically and successfully maneuver our client requests of having cannabis or marijuana served at the event?

The afternoon consisted of a panel discussion about cannabis’ impact on the private and wedding event industry and education on what is permitted, required and expected so we can balance client and wedding couples’ requests as well as government mandates.

As legalization of recreational marijuana maneuvers thru California., cannabis-infused weddings (from bud bouquets to cannabis cakes) are gaining popularity and creating a buzz within the wedding industry. Respectively, due to the increase in planning cannabis infused weddings, new businesses are being established because of the emergence of the two things legal marijuana and celebrations / events.

Pre-panel discussion, guests mingled and nibbled at an innovative munchies bar created by Creative Services Catering. Goodies included maple glazed bacon, ginormous chocolate chip cookies, mac n’ cheese, popcorn, candy, chips and Twizzlers.

The Panel consisted of:

  • GrassFed - event "budbar" producers of cannabis themed pop up events and facilitators

  • Tina Fanucchi-Frontado, owner of KopSun - a cannabis education, information and health resource company for women

  • Liz Rogan of Liz Rogan and Associates - cannabis liaison, educator and advocate

Topics of discussion included:

  • What is happening in California vs the rest of the country

  • How we are seeing marijuana represented culturally now vs ten years ago…5 years ago

  • How is cannabis impacting events?

  • Tools for those who are unaware of state legalities and restrictions

  • Navigating the legalities and logistic of cannabis at special events

  • Ways to integrate cannabis into a couple’s special day

  • Incorporating marijuana and leaves into wedding florals, bouquets, decor and centerpieces

  • Infusing food with weed, how to legally serve it and the permitting needed

The number one take-away and piece of advice we received from our panel is:

GET EDUCATED!

There are a multitude of resources available and many people aren’t aware of how to maneuver and responsibly incorporate using herbs in their celebrations.

Thank you to the Team that Helped make this day special:

Ultimate Gray + Illuminating Wedding Colors - Pantone Color of the Year 2021

Ultimate Gray + Illuminating Wedding Colors - Pantone Color of the Year 2021

At Felici Events we set trends (that is a fact!), and showcasing this wedding (featured on Santa Barbara Wedding Style) from 2016 proves it.

Pantone announced its 2021 Colors of the Year - Ultimate Gray and Illuminating last week.

We could not wait to re-share this wedding that took place at the historic Casa de la Guerra that use this exact color combination and give you some trending tips for weddings that we used to make this local wedding couple’s casual and purposeful fun wedding come to life!

First, let us share with you a bit about “PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR” - For over 20 years, Pantone’s Color of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design.

The Pantone Color of the Year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone’s color experts at Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new color influences.

This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, and effects that impact color, relevant social media platforms, and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention.”

Needless to say this all filters down into wedding and event design and trends. For us, we use all of the above-mentioned industries to help inspire us and create trendy touches for our non-profit Santa Barbara Events and Fundraisers as well as for our private social gatherings such as weddings, birthday parties, and bar or bat mitzvahs.

This year’s chosen colors are not a novelty by any means, but the meaning and story behind these colors is something we hold near and dear to our hearts based on the crazy Pandemic year and its effects on the world and in the event industry this past year.

“We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.”

PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray combined with PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating provides a message of happiness supported by fortitude, aspirational, which gives us hope.

I could not think of a better description than this color combination exemplifies for Eric and Nick’s ceremonious occasion! While these two gentlemen tied the knot, there was not a dry eye in the house. The support from their 150 guests, composed of close friends, family, was palpable during the couple’s nuptials. Once the festivities for the evening began happiness spread like a New York Minute.

For the color scheme, the couple picked the joyful combination of yellow and gray. On the tables, this translated to gray chevron runners from La Tavola paired with bright lemons incorporated into the centerpieces. The loose citrus added pops of yellow and aged wrought-iron lanterns added texture to the look.

Hanging from above, Bella Vista Designs hung romantic string lights and a cluster of bright-yellow paper installations to mark the dance floor area.

A little more about me, featured on Voyager LA - Meet Zohe Felici of Santa Barbara Wedding Style

A little more about me, featured on Voyager LA - Meet Zohe Felici of Santa Barbara Wedding Style

I loved this feature for one of my businesses, Santa Barbara Wedding Style, a blog dedicated to providing curated free inspirations to couples getting married in the American Riviera and surrounding areas.

Thank You Voyager LA for the write-up. You can see the whole post HERE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zohe Felici.

Zohe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a zealous wedding and event professional and business mentor.

I was born into a family of Felici Events (literally, in the womb, haha). Being 100% Italian born and raised, our family gathered at each meal and treated it as a celebration. And while at each meal, we were already planning our next meal, menu or gathering.

My passion for hospitality and career in the food and beverage industry started when I was three years old. I would be at my mom’s side, to help prepare dinner, set the table, and then play waitress. I recited the specials then would write down my family’s dinner order on (my favorite thing ever) an authentic carbon copy diner’s pad……I could barely read and write yet.

My love affair with restauranteering continued into college. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management from the University of North Texas and immediately launched my career into the corporate ladder of the 5-star luxury resort industry. This gifted me with a solid foundation in business, management, forecasting, exemplary guest services, and the training to lead empowered teams.

In the spring of 2006, I took a leap of faith and left the stability of corporate America to become an event manager for an established independent wedding and event planning company, and eventually launching my own Event Production Company, Felici Events, where I create immersive, creative and memorable experiences for intimate gatherings to large scale festivals.

In 2015, I became a “duo”-preneur and purchased www.SantaBarbaraWedding.com, A wedding blog dedicated to providing engaged couples resources and inspiration for planning their wedding in and around Santa Barbara.

In 2018 I became a coach and mentor for creative event professionals and wedding planners who desire to catapult their wedding/event business by attracting their perfect clients and uncovering five-figure months consistently.

I could not run the show for these three profitable wedding and event businesses without the support of a dedicated team, and am so grateful. I continue to grow all three companies while being an expert speaker and continuing to share my knowledge at numerous event industry conferences around the United States.

Has it been a smooth road?
Anytime there is growth, there certainly are struggles that accompany it. When I launched Felici Events, I had less than $500 in the bank. I WAS TERRIFIED. It was a powerhouse of event pro-“friend”ssional women who supported me as I gave birth to my brand and helped me find my courage to built my event production company. I was instantly planning weddings, fundraisers, corporate events, mitzvahs, and large international festivals with over 20,000 attendees.

In 2017 and 2018 Santa Barbara experienced the destructive Thomas fire and devastating mudslides. They not only affected our community, small businesses, and morale but also toppled the wedding industry with venues that were affected by the disasters. It was our community of wedding and event professionals who bound together to help each other and strengthen our efforts.

Now maneuvering thru COVID-19 and the effects of the pandemic to our industry, our wedding and event professionals have bonded more than ever to help each other maneuver thru such an unprecedented climate. Leading the group with weekly zoom calls, I was able to ensure that wedding + event pros from across the country got the support they need to flourish from the economic, emotional and social symptoms of the Pandemic.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I own and operate three businesses, all within the event industry.

Felici Events is a first-class, award-winning full-service event planning and production company that specializes in immersive and memorable events from 10 to 20,000 guests. Felici Events understands that excellent customer service relies on a complex choreography of often invisible moving parts. It is Zohe’s ability to manage both her clients and vendors that are the cornerstones to her success and countless happy clients who hire her company for their gatherings and special events.

Santa Barbara Wedding is a wedding blog dedicated to providing engaged couples resources and inspiration for planning their wedding in and around Santa Barbara. Zohe’s passion for showcasing the talented wedding planning professionals and venues of the American Riviera is curated especially for our blog and #SharingLoveInSB for you, and couples’ dream Santa Barbara wedding weekend!

ZoheFelici.com is a six-figure creative event-pro business coach. Part strategist and part motivational mentor, I provide no-fluff programs for creative event professionals who are ready to transform their businesses, uncover a consistent additional five figures per month, and LOVE what they do.

I know the demands and risks of running an event business. I provide the accountability, knowledge, tools, and perspective to overcome these challenges in order to build momentum and catapult results toward your event professionals DREAMS and GOALS.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, absolutely it is a great place to start an event planning business. There is such a supportive community in the Los Angeles area, between ILEA, NACE, WIPA as well as various independent wedding + event groups, the support is there, and the magic of events happens in LA starting all the celebrity and movie industry celebrations.

From Cars to Culture: How Immersive European Storytelling Transformed a Charity Fundraiser

From Cars to Culture: How Immersive European Storytelling Transformed a Charity Fundraiser

When the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County approached Felici Events to elevate their annual Rally 4 Kids fundraiser, we knew that simply arranging tables and chairs wouldn't create the transformative experience their cause deserved. With over 3,100 youth depending on UBGC's essential after-school programs, this fundraiser needed to be more than just an event—it needed to be an unforgettable journey that would open hearts, minds, and checkbooks.

Beyond Traditional Fundraising: The Immersive Experience Advantage

Traditional charity galas follow a predictable format: silent auction, dinner, speeches, paddle raise. But after producing hundreds of events since 2006, we've learned that immersion creates investment in ways that conventional approaches simply cannot match.

For the Rally 4 Kids "European Affair" theme, we didn't just decorate a venue—we created a multi-sensory European tour that began the moment guests arrived at the stunning Bella Vista Ranch in Summerland.

Grand Arrival: When Fashion Meets Function

The journey began with an entrance lined with the day's rally participants' luxury vehicles—Porsches, Ferraris, McLarens, Bentleys, and classic Alfa Romeos—creating an immediate sense of European automotive excellence.

But the true showstopper was our innovative red carpet entrance. Rather than a traditional straight walkway, we designed a winding red carpet that culminated in a stunning visual illusion: the carpet appeared to become the flowing dress of a live performer stationed at the entrance. This Instagram-worthy moment created immediate buzz and set the tone for an evening where nothing would be ordinary.

"I've attended dozens of galas in Santa Barbara, but I've never seen an entrance like this," remarked one longtime supporter. "Before I even reached the cocktail area, I knew this wouldn't be a typical fundraiser."

Cocktail Hour: Interactive Cultural Ambassadors

Instead of standard servers circulating with appetizers, we transformed the cocktail reception into a European street scene with character actors representing three distinct European cultures:

  • Italian Gondolier: Complete with striped shirt, traditional hat, and authentic Italian accent, our gondolier didn't just serve Aperol Spritzes—he shared stories about Venice's famous canals and taught guests Italian phrases, creating micro-moments of cultural education.

  • Dutch Girl: With traditional braids, wooden shoes, and carrying tulips, our Dutch representative offered guests traditional bitterballen and jenever tastings while sharing facts about the Netherlands' rich history of supporting children's education.

  • British Bobby: Our authentic-looking British police officer maintained "order" with witty banter while serving gin cocktails and discussing the history of youth clubs in the UK (which actually inspired the Boys & Girls Clubs movement in America).

These interactive characters didn't just entertain—they subtly reinforced the global importance of youth development programs similar to what UBGC provides locally.

"The characters made learning about European culture fun, but they also cleverly tied everything back to the cause," noted one first-time attendee. "I found myself drawing parallels between youth programs in Europe and what the Boys & Girls Clubs do here."

Mini Rally Mayhem: Racing for a Cause

During cocktail hour, we orchestrated an unexpected burst of competitive energy with our signature Box Car Mini Rally. Four custom-designed miniature cars—each sponsored by a different donor team—raced head-to-head on a specially constructed track that commanded center stage in the reception area.

Guests gathered around, cocktails in hand, cheering for their favorites as these carefully crafted vehicles zoomed down the track. The playful competition drew crowds, sparked friendly rivalry, and cleverly reinforced the day's rally theme while creating a natural opportunity for additional fundraising. Teams placed last-minute "enhancement" bids to give their cars advantages—special wheels, weight reductions, or even subtle track advantages—with all proceeds benefiting UBGC programs.

"The mini rally absolutely electrified the cocktail hour," noted one longtime supporter. "It gave everyone something to talk about and created this wonderful shared experience before we even sat down for dinner."

Culinary Theatre: The Gastro Garage Experience

We partnered with The Gastro Garage, an immersive culinary performance group, to create an interactive food experience that complemented our European theme. As guests moved through the cocktail reception, they encountered chefs in mechanic-inspired attire wielding blowtorches to finish gourmet donut sliders before their eyes.

These weren't ordinary appetizers—they were theatrical performances that engaged all senses. The visual drama of flames caramelizing toppings, the sizzling sounds, the aromas wafting through the air, and finally, the explosion of flavors as guests bit into these savory creations. Each slider featured European-inspired flavor combinations that reinforced our theme.

To complement these show-stopping sliders, servers circulated with international soup shots—petite portions of European soups served in shot glasses that provided a perfect welcome taste. From Spanish gazpacho to French onion to Italian minestrone, these small bites told a culinary story of Europe's diverse food traditions.

"The Gastro Garage experience created immediate conversation starters," noted one board member. "I watched complete strangers bonding over the spectacle of these chefs torching food right in front of them. It broke down barriers in a way traditional passed appetizers never could."

Dining Drama: The "Singing Waiter" Experience

The theatrical immersion continued seamlessly into dinner with our signature "Singing Waiter" experience—a performance element that has since been requested at multiple high-profile events throughout Santa Barbara County.

The scenario began innocently enough: a seemingly disgruntled server "accidentally" dropped a tray of glasses, creating a commotion that drew all eyes. As the maitre d' rushed over to address the situation, the "drunken" waiter grabbed the microphone, interrupting emcees CJ Ward and Beth Farnsworth.

Just as guests began shifting uncomfortably in their seats, wondering if they were witnessing an actual disruption, the waiter broke into a powerful operatic performance of "O Sole Mio," revealing himself as a professionally trained opera singer.

Throughout dinner, the performance evolved into what guests later described as "dinner theater meets mob movie," with various servers revealing their musical talents in unexpected moments—from Italian arias to French chanson to Spanish flamenco-inspired pieces.

"The progression from 'Oh no, this is awkward' to 'Wow, this is amazing!' created an emotional journey that kept everyone engaged," explained Michael Baker, CEO of United Boys & Girls Clubs. "People weren't checking their phones or having side conversations—they were fully present, wondering what would happen next."

The Impact: Immersion Drives Investment

The results spoke for themselves:

  • The event raised approximately $250,000 for UBGC's after-school programming

  • Attendance increased from previous years to 320 guests

  • Demand grew so significantly that subsequent events moved to larger venues to accommodate 500+ anticipated attendees

  • Several first-time donors became major supporters, citing the immersive experience as what convinced them of the organization's creativity and resourcefulness

"What Felici Events created wasn't just entertaining—it was strategic," commented Tony Vallejo, UBGC Board Chair. "The immersive elements kept guests engaged throughout the evening, which meant they were fully present during our mission moments and fundraising appeals."

The Psychology Behind Immersive Fundraising

Our approach to the Rally 4 Kids leveraged several key psychological principles that fundraising research has consistently validated:

  1. Transportational Engagement: When people are "transported" into a narrative experience, they demonstrate greater empathy and are more likely to take action that aligns with the story's values.

  2. Peak-End Rule: People judge experiences largely based on how they felt at the most intense moments and at the end, rather than an average of the entire experience. Our strategic emotional high points created lasting impressions.

  3. Reciprocity Principle: When guests receive an exceptional experience (rather than just a meal), they feel a natural desire to reciprocate with greater generosity.

  4. Sensory Integration: Engaging multiple senses simultaneously creates stronger memory encoding and emotional connection, making donors more likely to support the cause in the future.

Creating Your Own Immersive Fundraising Experience

While every nonprofit has unique needs, our experience with the Rally 4 Kids offers valuable lessons for any organization looking to elevate their fundraising efforts:

  1. Begin the experience at arrival: Your event starts the moment guests approach the venue, not when they sit down for dinner.

  2. Create unexpected moments: Strategic surprises reset attention spans and create memorable highlights.

  3. Integrate mission with entertainment: Every entertaining element should ultimately connect back to your cause.

  4. Engage all five senses: Consider not just what guests will see and hear, but what they'll taste, smell, and touch throughout the experience.

  5. Build emotional progression: Map out an intentional emotional journey that culminates at your giving moment.

The Future of Fundraising Is Immersive

As philanthropy continues to evolve, donors increasingly expect more than a tax deduction in exchange for their support—they want meaningful experiences that connect them to causes in authentic ways.

For the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County, the "European Affair" wasn't just a successful fundraiser; it established a new standard for how the organization engages with supporters. The immersive approach has since become a signature element of their fundraising strategy, helping them expand programming to new locations in Buellton, Solvang, and beyond.

"What makes Felici Events different is their understanding that fundraising isn't just about asking for money—it's about creating an environment where giving feels like a natural extension of an extraordinary experience," reflected Michael Baker. "They transformed our event from a traditional gala into a journey our supporters didn't want to end."

As we continue to develop innovative approaches to fundraising events, one thing remains clear: in a world of constant digital distraction, immersive in-person experiences have unparalleled power to connect people to causes in ways that inspire genuine, sustainable support.

Whether you're planning a major gala, an intimate donor cultivation event, or something in between, the principles of immersive storytelling can help your organization not just raise funds, but build a community of passionate advocates who will support your mission for years to come.

Community Memorial with 2000+ Attendees for Mr. Santa Barbara

Community Memorial with 2000+ Attendees for Mr. Santa Barbara

It was an incredible honor to create an event commemorating the late Michale Towbes, Santa Barbara’s most influential and respected entrepreneur and philanthropist. The community event consisted of an afternoon at the Granada Theatre. Over 2000 spectators and community members gathered as Michael Towbes’ closest friends, family, work confidants and even Governor Jerry Brown took the stage to individually honor and shared in songs, stories, photo collages and favorite memories of the beloved guest of honor. The touching tribute ended with Mr. Towbes friends and family on stage to sing the guest of honor’s favorite song and getting every single spectator of the filled theater on their feet to .

The afternoon memoriam was followed by a champagne toast and mini cupcake reception at the iconic Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Gardens. A quartet performed Mr. Towbes favorite songs while guests mingled and celebrated the life of our community’s beloved philanthropist, and all-around mensch. The garden party included orchids, his favorite flowers as well as personalized cocktail napkins printed with his favorite quotes or “Towbe-isms including:

“Onward and upward…”
“Some of the best deals I ever made were  the ones I didn’t make”
”The only thing I like better than a ground breaking is a ribbon cutting”
”I always try to do my best, even when no one is watching”

We had the absolute pleasure of working with Mr. Towbes on several party planner projects, including his 80th Birthday Celebration and Fundraiser for the Granada Theatre Capital Campaign, his 85th birthday brunch and a show at Bacara Resort and Spa, as well as one of his company’s 60th Anniversary Celebration and Roast of MT. Each event was carefully planned to exemplify things Mr. Towbes loved and supported, the arts, fundraising and success in business. Creating this garden party to reflect and combine the personality, passion and entrepreneurial psyche of our local tycoon was the hardest story to tell, and the most rewarding to produce.

Undoubtedly, Mr. Towbes has been a huge influence on our community and the people in it. Everybody wanted to celebrate the life of this extraordinary man, Michael Towbes.

Santa Barbara will not be the same without him.

A Dramatic Oceanfront Wedding Ceremony with a Greenhouse Reception

A Dramatic Oceanfront Wedding Ceremony with a Greenhouse Reception

Owners of a new local organic restaurant, it was important to the bride and groom that the location resonated with their plant-based and sustainability mantra, therefore what better than a greenhouse wedding reception location? That is why we produced this organic wedding for a sweet couple at the Orchid Estate along the Gaviota Coast.

Something that I find NUMBER ONE IMPORTANT when seeking an event venue, is to find a location that ties in with the theme, purpose, personality or intended vibe. In this case, the greenhouse brings so much interest and uniqueness to the guest experience, not only is it a WOW factor to be forever remembered, it was a day-journey.

Guests were shuttled to the end of the property, walked a short path, crossed the train tracks to find themselves along a breathtaking oceanfront cliff lined with wooden benches. After the teary eyes wedding ceremony, and swoop kiss, guests enjoyed cocktails and delicious hors d’ouvres inside a living plant portion of the greenhouse.

For dinner, live music entertained guests inside the event greenhouse, which was decorated with mismatched chairs, runners, wooden tables and interesting furnitures. The eclectic decor complimented the industrial and symmetrical greenhouse, softening the look and feel of the unique venue.

Thank you to the amazing team of vendors who helped make this another flawless #FeliciWedding.

Lavender & Purple Wedding at Alice Keck Park & El Paseo Restaurant

Lavender & Purple Wedding at Alice Keck Park & El Paseo Restaurant

Featured on Santa Barbara Wedding Style Blog, this bride and groom are very special to Zohe because the groom is one of Zohe's best friends, and Zohe was honored when they asked her to plan their Santa Barbara wedding.

The couple chose to hold their ceremony at the beautiful Alice Keck Park in Santa Barbara, since that is where they had part of their first date.

The bride knew her colors from the start of the wedding planning, that is why the bridesmaids wore purple, knee length gowns and carried varied shades of purple floral bouquets crafted by the ever talented Margaret Joan Florals.

The couple hung different shades of purple ribbons behind them at the existing lush ceremony altar, creating a fun backdrop as Rich Tobin led the couple through their vows. Guitar Witt duo softly played Spanish style music throughout the ceremony which incorporated the bride's Cuban background and added romance to the park’s ambiance.

Felici Events worked with this couple to plan a wonderful day for them as they moved from the ceremony to the iconic El Paseo Restaurant for their reception.

Kelsey Crews Photo captured the day so perfectly and that she even got a few shots in of the couple’s beloved pooch, Kirby, who made his appearance at the ceremony. The day ended on a sweet note with a full dance floor of dancers, and nonstop dancing to music provided by Gavin Roy Presents as well as a delicious cake by Christine Dahl Pastries.
